In the ALT dispatch company that I work for there are really no such things as sick days. If an ALT misses a day because they are sick they don't get paid for the days they are out and they also lose the 20,000 yen bonus for a perfect month at work.

I used to work as a direct hire from a BOE up in Niigata. In those days the sick days were basically unlimited up to a certain point. An ALT would have to pass in a note from a doctor if they spent more than 3 days out of work in a row and they could not spend more than 20 days sick in a row without being at risk of losing their job.

All in all I miss Niigata.

Technically speaking I don't have any really, unless I have to be put in the hospital. Just use regular nenkyu. To use a sick day costs money to get the Doc's excuse form here, insurance does not cover it.

Yeah, that's what I hate most about being an ALT, especially as in Japan I tend to catch a cold every 2-3 months. But as I don't wanna miss the money, I always drag myself to work (and it can happen that I can barely speak during class..). In such cases I really wish I could have at least a single day off to take good care of my throat.
At least 5 days/year paid sick leave would be really nice and fair (if they have to, they can ask for a doctor's excuse).

That's the normal rule in Europe, too (and the way it should be).

I don't think I have any "sick days" as such, but if I do its counted as one of my holidays. Obviously I am not happy about it, but I get a reasonable amount of days off compared to the actual hours I work per day, so .....

If I take a sick day in this school, I'd wager I'm pretty much MEXTed.

I suppose a health check will be mandatory this August, when I'm actually able to take paid holidays.

My company is pretty good when it comes to sick days. I don't have sick days so to speak it comes from my nenku which is fine by me as I am paid a month salary for the whole year even during the summer and winter break. (which is long) and I don't need to take my Nenku really. so if I am sick I call up, my company is very understanding and there is no money probs at all. It doesn't affect my bonus at the end of the year. They once didn't let me go back to work untill I had a letter from the doc to say I was over the influenza I had. I really like my company.

I am not sure what the story is with sick days with my company. What I do know is that I needed to go back to NZ for a week for a funeral a month ago (didn`t make it though), and my company told me to take the week off. Sweet as. Summer vacation is full salary also.

I got full salary on summer vacation too. Don't know how that relates to 'sick days' but whatever...
