If you can't spell properly

Postby moolooman on Fri Jul 15, 2011 9:03 am

I was over looking at Dave's ESL Cafe (sorry Otaku, please forgive me), and I came accross a game posted by one of my fellow countrymen. The comment he put at the end re:spelling cracked me up.

"Some students will learn how to spell long words in their own time to be more competitive. I've had words like 'extrasensory', 'nauseating' and 'internationalisation' (or internationalization if you can't spell properly ;). This is great, but I make sure the kids actually know what the word means before allowing its use."

God bless Webster, for taking a stand and battling against this sort of irrational, tradition-stewed paradigm on spelling conventions.

We all stand with you Web! At least those of us who believe that letters are symbols meant to represent sounds, that is.

No worries, Mooloo. I've pulled some games from that place myself. Also, there are a couple of links over there to Englipedia. Also, I've worked with a teacher from that forum in the past. She wrote the article on Distinguishing R & L.

One of the first volunteers helping me build Englipedia said it best: "Building a teacher's resource website is not about competition. It's not about whose site is better. It's about having options. The more, the merrier!"

About spellings,

MEXT British spelling! And, MEXT American spelling equally! The real power is knowing which is which and being able to switch back and forth depending on the audience. It's just like introducing yourself in Japanese versus English...
