how long you planning on ALTing_?

so i know some of us have been here for a while, and some not. just wondering how long most of you plan on being here teaching english. or in some cases, how long you originally planned to, or if you dont particularlly have much of a plan.

my students sometimes ask me how long i plan on being in japan, or if i plan on being here forever, and they cant seems to comprehend that i have not decided/ dont know.

Ask them what their dream is for the future and when a kid answers I don't know give them the same no comphrehension look. Won't make a difference to them but it might make you feel better.

Personally I worked for 2 major Japanese Corporations before getting into this racket. I worked here during the bubble for a major international telelphone company and got canned when the bubble popped.

I was then a facilities manager for 3 hospitals here in Okinawa for roughly 10 years prior to getting back so to say this work.

I enjoy it. I work well with the kids, they love me, they better anyway, and I dont know how much longer. I guess when I get tired of it.

haha, i came with the idea of staying 5 years and i am going after one. i would have totally wanted to leave in my 3rd month.

You know I think if I had come here first off and been an ALT I think I would have been all over the front pages of every major newspaper here in Japan for murdering every Japanese teacher that I could get my hands on well not really but I think I get the point across.

However going into it with a better knowledge and understanding of the culture and language and what is expected in a "typical" Japanese work environment made a bigger difference in allowing me to overlook a lot of the BS that goes on daily and focus more on having fun with the job.
