Funny things your students wrote or said.

Anything pertaining to situations inside of the school, but outside of the classroom.

Last week a JHS first grader asked me (in Japanese), "Are there numbers in America?", to which I was trying to figure out how I misunderstood his question...

But he asked it the same a 2nd time and looked serious, so I say, "YES, Of course!" And he follows up with "Are they the same numbers?", "Do you have zero?"

I expect those questions at kindergarten, but this kid is 12 and already learned English numbers 3 months ago in New Horizon (and presumably last year with Eigo Noto).?...

sometimes I correct tests for the JTE, and it's funny (and sad at the same time) what kids sometimes write.
For example they had to write "something is close to the school" and one kid wrote "sloce to".. Maybe for some people C is always S sound (Amerisa, Sanada..)

Yeah, it took a while for me to understand the foreigner's point of view that English is 'difficult'. I am slowly beginning to agree with them.

Learning any language is difficult, really. I understand that universally, a handful of languages are rather difficult.

Chinese --> intonations and thousands of characters
Arabic --> writing system without vowels
Japanese --> many readings for kanji
Russian --> don't remember the reason.. maybe the unique writing system

Sorry I have no source

English wasn't too close to the top, if I remeber correctly, but with lots of seemingly arbitrary rules, mountains of exceptions, and consonant blending, it is definately a challenge for speakers of certain languages to pick it up.

Languages are always growing and evolving. That is what makes language viable in this day an age even though spoken languages were in use in one form or another since bygone times.

What makes a language hard for most people are the exceptions to the grammar rules, but those are almost always caused by the same language evolution that makes modern language useful in this day and age.

 Once upon a time, I agreed to answer any question so long as the question was spoken in perfect English. Yesterday after lunch, a girl I'm talking to looks at my chest. She promptly asks me, "How big is your bust? What is your size?" I could've argued the first one wasn't perfect English, but the second one...

So I answered her. I'm still blushing. Was that the right thing to do or am I going to ALT hell?

Hah. Definitively no ALT hell for you IMHO. Sounds like a good way to get the kids too use English that they would not usually use. (btw, great first post).

It may come around to bite you in the rear if the boys get a hold of that information and hang it out infront of the class like dirty laundry. Other than that though...good idea. Infact I may propose that to my students as well. (Also assuming like you did, that they couldn't possibly phrase anything bizzar or disgraceful!)

I once had a student ask me (this was a recurring question that year, actually) if I like "AV". Growing tired of the question I though, MEXT it!

I asked him, "how about you?"

He eagerly nodded, "yes". His two friends watched in anticipation. He asked again.

So I said, "of course! I'm a man." Mildly surprised, they smirked in satisfaction at my answer.

There were only a couple months left that year, but I carried around a light nervousness the whole time. Nothing ever came of it.

Believe me I have been asked worse and answered honestly as well, from both boys and girls. The initial question was looking for a response to generate laughs, but when it got serious the boys and girls asking "said" question were highly interested and listened.

One question you might ask.....When is the first time you had sex? That from the boys, and the girls, When is it ok for me to have sex with my BF?

I've had the former, but never the latter! This sort of question shocked me for some time when I first started teaching in JHS here. Has anyone here ever spoken that way to your teachers at home? Not being judgmental, just surprised.

How did you answer? ... the latter question, of course.

The latter, would take a long post here that might bore folks to death, so I'll just give you the results,

The girl in question was in 3rd yr JHS in a private school I was teaching in at the time, she had no interest in going on to HS, although her parents were pushing for it big time. Her interest at the time was being with her BF and wanting to get married. Her daddy warbucks father, totally against it of course, pushed her into HS, where she eventually was expelled for numerous violations of the school rules. Anyway, she ended up getting pregnant, having 3 kids by the time she was 21, and her husband runs a, from what I hear, very successful soapland, which she happens to pick up and deliver customers to on a nightly basis.

I barely go a day without getting asked about my sex life....

When was your first time?
When did you last have sex?
How many people have you done it with?
Do you watch AV?
What is AV?
How do you say (insert body part/sexual act here)

And from the girls (usually, but sometimes the guys)
Did it hurt?
Does it feel good?

And then there are questions about my body - cup size, color of my body parts, etc.,

Depending on my mood I answer them either with its a secret, or none of your business, or if it is a bit more harmless I tell the truth.

Most of this is in Japanese, but occassionally they use English.
I had two boys who used to yell "SUCK MY DICK! LICK YOUR PUSSY!" down the hall at me. I ignored them and they got tired of it...... after about 4 months.

For the past year another kid looks at me and says, in English "big chest." I've smacked him, other kids have smacked him for me, I've told him I will tell someone he is sexually harrasing me, but he doesn't stop. Sometimes he reminds me, however, that my chest is in reality not big, and I should be ashamed because Americans have big boobs.

I'm sure I'm forgetting a lot of the stuff that gets said to me. It tends to run together....

Probably because of the letters AV and the words adult video, censors here in Japan are picky about little letters like that! :gas:
