I don't know why this has been bothering me so much lately, probably because I relocated prefectures and took a pay cut because I too was a victim of a crappy BOE IT department and a supervisor who didn't care.
So, I've been hearing lately from ALTs all over Japan becoming victims of harsh restrictions on their computers. These restrictions vary in intensity - all the way from the inability to surf Englipedia and other educational websites to being refused to load software needed to make our jobs easier (while at the same time being told they couldn't bring their own computers to work). This irritates me to no extreme. A competent IT department would be able to set up an ALT's computer so they have access to printers but keep them off the network. This would allow the ALT to load software on their computer without bringing risk to the whole network. Also, this would allow the ALT to surf the sites they need to get to. However, in borg-like fashion, a blanket policy is issued which jams up being able to work smoothly at work.
I know this can be done because that is exactly how my school has set up my computer. I have access to the printers, able to load any software onto my computer, and surf anywhere I want on the internet.
Question: do you think there will ever come a day that the vast BOEs across Japan will actually care about the needs of an ALT?
