ALT Working hours...how many do you teach?

Teach? Dude, I teach 18 classes a week!

And, I just finished up teaching a hardnosed admin a lesson. ;P Got the information removed this morning. Probably pissed him off in the process to know his powers can be subverted.

serious question here.

is that supposed to be a lot?

in a standard week, when everything goes by the actual schedule, I have 23. And one of those 23, consists of 3 different 20 min lessons for 1+2, 3 and 4th grades ES.

I would say 18 is more than average for a JHS ALT. Of course, at ES you teach more classes. Glad not to be you! hehehe!

ALT Working hours...how many do you teach?

Postby Paul on Wed Dec 15, 2010 12:46 pm

Seriously you guys are getting overworked.

3 to 4 hours MAX per day, JHS or ES. RARELY 4 everyday, sometimes 6 only when I am a nice guy and they want me for something special, which is just about everyday seeing as how I am such a great guy.

18 hours a week isnt bad, really, considering the alternatives that JHS teachers have, besides their regular classes, they have Moral's class, electives classes, sogo-gakkshu classes, and HRT's have their homeroom classes along with lunch together as well.

I know teachers that have over 25 hours in the classroom every week. That is damn near every possible hour available.

I've got about 18 on average per week which I consider pretty light. In the States I was teaching 35 classes a week. Bogus I tell ya.

Were you a public English teacher? or ESL? Either way 35 is pretty hardcore!

I too teach the the average 12-18 hours, but take lots of time to prepare. Cutting stuff out, making flash cards, posters and such.

I was a physics and math teacher. I taught a credit-recovery math course for zero-hour (before regular school started) five physics classes and one geometry. I did all the planning for those suckers too. I had absolutely no free time.

I teach 11 JHS hours a week, and I teach 8 ES hours a week. So, 19 total. Plus, I teach in a small community.

I teach about 15-20 classes at my JHS per week.
I teach about 20-24 classes at my Ele schools per week.

I alternate one week at JHS and one at my 5 Ele schools, one each day.

lol...one school for me, too. I used to do that 5 school business...didn't like it cuz you can't get regular time with students...you're always have guest-like status.

One school = lots of face-time with the students. Me like that so I can regularly subject them to English-learning torture.

When I first read this I was like...WTF?!??!!! Slave labor!

Then thankfully I read the rest of what you wrote.......

I alternate one week at JHS and one at my 5 Ele schools, one each day.

So in ES I take it you are teaching 4 to 5 hours a day?

Dude you gotta have a ton of stamina.

Its brutal. A new elementary school everyday each ele week. Its not fun towards the end of the week. Because each school only sees me once every 2 weeks, the kids are super genki when I show up. So by Friday, I am done with them trying to grope me. Lol.

Needless to say, my JHS is a time to unwind from little kids getting all up in my junk.

Usually 23 classes a week unless I'm lucky and some get cancelled. That's split 50/50 between jhs and elementary. Fridays are the worst with 6 straight classes of elementary 5th/6th grade.

in a month i spend 3 weeks at JHS, teaching 17 classes a week and 1 week at ES where teach about 4 classes a day for a week. I dread going to ES. They keep me there to long, I usally save all my lesson making for the end of the day and still with that I have about a hour to walk arouns and do nothing. No computer at my desk either so the last hour is a pain.

Hi all
I teach about 20 classes a week but it changes all the time. I used to teach 32 classes a week at 45 min each at my old job in the private english schools. so 20 is a very nice number indeed.

I teach at JHS 3 days a week a total of 9 classes.
I teach at Elem 2 days a week a total of 7 to 10 classes.
I don't feel busy because there is downtime at JHS and cancellations.
I like the schedule.

For 3 years I was at a JHS and 3 Elementaries a total of only 11 classes a week. At JHS, I was there 3 days in a row during week 1 and during week 2 a fourth day without classes, either on my butt or walking around the school in circles. I was in an office that had no atmosphere. Nobody liked to talk, staff were extremely private and never asked me anything despite me asking them. I like the internet and all but I'm a social creature. The first 6 months were ok, but then my JHS classes where cut to 50% to increase grammar, well, I learned how to entertain myself very w ell.

Every Week JHS Mon.: 2 classes
JHS Tues: 1 class
JHS Wed: 3 classes
I also taught elementary classes, on Fri and Thurs. in Week 1 and only on Friday in Week 2

Week 1: I taught on Thurs. 4 Elem. classes / Fri. 3 Elem classes.
Week 2: I taught on Thurs. 2 Elem. classes

New job is better balanced and I have more classes.

Last year I worked at two elementary schools (one big and one small) in which I taught at least 20 classes a week. I enjoyed the teaching and it kept me busy enough to be occupied while I was at work but not so busy that I had to stress about getting anything done.

This year I moved to the same town’s JHS and the situation has changed a lot. I have at most 14 classes a week, but many times those classes get canceled for one reason or another. There are even two days a week in which I have only one class.

On the bright side, the teachers tell me well in advance what we will be doing so I can spend my free time preparing for class. Though I have to watch out about becoming overzealous and finishing all my prep in one day… :shoothead:
