YEAR versus GRADE

Postby Zedicus on Thu Sep 29, 2011 11:21 am

If you teach middle schoolers or high schoolers, you do not teach 1st, 2nd, and 3rd GRADERS. Those are elementary school students. You teach 7th, 8th, and 9th graders, or you teach 10th, 11th, and 12th graders.

The word you are looking for is YEAR. '1st YEAR,' '2nd YEAR', and '3rd YEAR'.

"This is the 1st year textbook."
"My 3rd years were CRAZY today."

It bothers me when Japanese teachers say this, so I always correct them. But it INFURIATES me when ALTs do it. Please stop falling into using incorrect Japanese-English.

I will assume that Zedicus is correct on this point, and I welcome him to the forum.
I would suggest that letting these kinds of micro-annoyances (自分の単語) will result in letting the man get you down. I tend to let the bigger stuff get me down.

Thank you for the welcome, Moolooman. :) To be honest, when Japanese people say it, it doesn't really get me down. I just correct it and move on. But ALTs should know better!

Which is why I posted here. Spread the word!

In my homeland, we don't use Grade at all. It is New Entry, Year 1, Year 2 . . .
High school goes from Year 9 to Year 13.

Are you raging at me for calling Canada Canadia, or are you raging for my complete lack of understanding?

I come from the land of the Hobbits, sheep, rugby, and no snakes. We split the atom, arguably flew before the Wright Brothers, climbed Mt Everest first, gave woman the vote first, and invented the pavalova.

Those Canadians just make nice Maple Syrup, and play hockey, and make the greatest TV show there is.

Anyway, does school start a year early in New Zealand, or does it go on a year longer?

There are 13 academic year levels, numbered 1 through to 13. Students turning five enter at Year 1 if they begin school at the beginning of the school year or before the cut-off date (31 March in legislation, later for most schools). Students who turn five late in the year might stay in Year 1 for the next school year depending on their academic progress. (Wikipedia, 2011)

Canada used to have 13 grades but we did away with it just after I gradumacated. It was more of a prep for uni. The college kids usually graduated after grade 12.

Germany still has 13 years of school before university. Still a mystery to me why.. such a BS.

Oh well, there so many things one should know better.. I'm sure that applies to you too ^^' But thanks for the info, good to know (never went to an English school).

1. Well, if any country had the right to call that itself, it could be only England (doubt that Tolkien had ever been to NZ). And I'm not sure, but wasn't rugby invented by the English as well? (have no idea about that sport, sorry)
2. which is?

Oh, and Zedicus, please introduce yourself in the "general member self-intro thread" if you don't mind.

I thought Tolkien, BTW they're making The Hobbit as I type this, did visit NZ? I feel the need to study some Tolkien history now. :chin:

OK, I looked it up on Wikipedia, which wouldn't disappoint me if I was wrong on this info, but he never went to New Zealand, as far as I could tell. I could be wrong on two counts

1) It was Wikipedia
2) I just only typed CTRL F and then typed in 'New Zealand' for the search. The only hit that came up was when it referred to the L.O.T.R. movie productions.

He did, however, have a lot to do with South Africa, which brought back to memory the biography I watched from the L.O.T.R.: The Fellowship Of The Ring Extended Version.

@ zedicus
@ sum1: there are a lot of people who don`t trust wikipedia, but I`ve never been aware of any mistake, usually most articles seem quite thorough imo. (which makes sense, as one wouldn`t bother to write something about something one doesn`t like; and even if, someone who is actually interested in that topic would certainly correct it soon).
(I actually happen to be reading Lotr at the moment (1st time in English))
@mooloo: don`t know that, will check it out out of curiousity (on wikipedia  )
