just noticed this, but what in the hell for??? did they think of it as impolite or something?

Actually yes. Well maybe not impolite per say but not a proper way to speak English. My Dad was particularly against hearing it because he said " It makes you sound dumb!" and "I haven't raised any dummies in this family!" or "It sounds like you are chewing on something when you are talking."

They were very strict about us enunciating our words and speaking clearly so that people could understand wtf we were talking about.

In a manner of speaking it's probably thanks to them that one of my sisters worked for many years on a very popular radio station back home, she spoke very clearly.

Little things make me respect people more. Good on your parents.

EDIT: Not that you had it 'beat outta' you...but that they inisited on proper enunciation.

And, now he has to beat it INTO his students. I think Azuhl's parents need to come to Japan and beat it out of his JTE.

Oh I got that part! My Dad beat the crap out of us for every little thing. Dude had a forefinger that could probably drill through a concrete wall. If he did today the stuff he did to my brothers and me, I am quite sure he would be in jail for child abuse or worse. His explanation was always, "This is the way my Dad did it to me, so you get the same" and "This is going to hurt me more than you".

It took me many years to come to gripes with that line of bullshit believe me. It's cool though, he's been dead for over 24 years now!

Well, I went though the lesson three times. And, to tell your the truth, it was actually fun. The kids really got into saying "uh-huh," and every time I said something to them after that class they would answer me with "uh-huh." The only real reason the lessons did go well though was because the English teacher was out of the room for 90% of the classes doing something else so I could actually teach the lesson in the way that I thought was best. All in all it was not that bad.

 And that is half the fun! I love it when the JTE's don't come to class! (Well it depends upon the JTE that is!)

Wasn't the best lesson plan or game ever but it worked. I guess in the end that is what matters.
