Translating Songs! =D

Postby jessen100 on Fri Apr 24, 2009 10:54 am

so were going to have a translating songs class in the english elective class in JHS in my school so i want to get a good list of songs that are easy enough that they can translate. (with a little of my help where necessary.)

The song(s) they have used in previous years were like, carpenters songs, notably ones ive never heard of, that sort of thing.

so if anyone has any good ideas for songs of any genres that will be maybe hard, but not impossible for JHS 3rd graders to translate, lets hear them. Im personally going for songs that are as unlike pop japanese songs as possible, and a wide variety of genres.

Ive only thought of two songs that i dont think will be too hard so far, so maybe lyrically at this or an easier level of good songs.
the song being good is pretty key as well.

Pearl Jam - Last Kiss (probably too hard, buts its a pretty straightforward story type song so idk)
Living Colour - Cult of personality (seems hard but its pretty grammatically simple, so good imo)

i personally want to make them do songs they dont know.

input plz.

Eminem!!! Nah, just joking...

There are a couple of links on the sites that have laundry lists of songs already translated into Japanese. The two links are located in the JHS area. Don't know if that will help...

that will help in that i would like them to not simply look up the songs like that on the internet, so i might try to exclude those songs, but thats probably unstoppable anyways.

thx

how about

Mary Poppins:
[Spoken]
In ev'ry job that must be done
There is an element of fun
You find the fun and snap!
The job's a game

[Sung]
And ev'ry task you undertake
Becomes a piece of cake
A lark! A spree! It's very clear to see that

A Spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down
The medicine go down-wown
The medicine go down
Just a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down
In a most delightful way

A robin feathering his nest
Has very little time to rest
While gathering his bits of twine and twig
Though quite intent in his pursuit
He has a merry tune to toot
He knows a song will move the job along - for

A Spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down
The medicine go down-wown
The medicine go down
Just a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down
In a most delightful way

[Interlude]

The honey bee that fetch the nectar
From the flowers to the comb
Never tire of ever buzzing to and fro
Because they take a little nip
From ev'ry flower that they sip
And hence (And hence),
They find (They find)
Their task is not a grind.

Ah-h-h-h-h-h-h-h-h-h-h ah!

A Spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down
The medicine go down-wown
The medicine go down
Just a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down
In a most delightful way

get them to think of their studies in the same way.

i dont know what context you post this marry poppins song in...

i was looking for things more alone the lines of which i dont loathe.

but srsly something a little more modernly cultured than mary poppins would be ideal. how old is that movie? (idk)

mary poppins aint got no soul.

i want to show them real music.

I won't hijack your thread and pull you up on this one, I can see your tastes from your first post.

play them some radiohead or the streets or something, there's plenty of inane modernly cultured music. How about some winehorse, she causes quite a stir

Lyrics to You Know I'm No Good :
Meet you downstairs in the bar and hurt,
Your rolled up sleeves in your skull t-shirt,
You say “what did you do with him today?”,
And sniffed me out like I was Tanqueray,
’Cause you're my fella, my guy,
Hand me your stella and fly,
By the time I'm out the door,
You tear men down like Roger Moore,

I cheated myself,
Like I knew I would,
I told you I was trouble,
You know that I'm no good,

Upstairs in bed, with my ex boy,
He's in a place, but I can't get joy,
Thinking on you in the final throes,
This is when my buzzer goes,
Run out to meet you, chips and pitta,
You say “when we married”,
'cause you're not bitter,
”There'll be none of him no more,”
I cried for you on the kitchen floor,

I cheated myself,
Like I knew I would,
I told you I was trouble,
You know that I'm no good,

Sweet reunion, Jamaica and Spain,
We're like how we were again,
I'm in the tub, you on the seat,
Lick your lips as I soak my feet,
Then you notice likkle carpet burn,
My stomach drops and my guts churn,
You shrug and it's the worst,
Who truly stuck the knife in first

I cheated myself,
Like I knew I would
I told you I was trouble,
You know that I'm no good,

I cheated myself,
Like I knew I would
I told you I was trouble,
Yeah, you know that I'm no good

I am sorry I missed this one previously. Thanks for bringing it back up here Tengu :kanpai:

I personally went brain dead within seconds of hearing the music but teenagers seem to love it here, and one of my JTE's has chosen to use this in class as well.

Lyrics to What I've Been Looking For :
Ryan:
It's hard to believe
That I couldn't see

Together:
You were always there beside me
Thought I was alone
With no one to hold
But you were always right beside me

Sharpay:
This feelings like no other

Together:
I want you to know

I've never had someone that knows me like you do
the way you do
I've never had someone as good for me as you
no one like you so lonely before I finally found
what i've been looking for

Sharpay:
So good to be seen
So good to be heard

Together:
Don't have to say a word

Ryan:
For so long I was lost
So good to be found

Together:
I'm loving having you around

Ryan:
This feeling's like no other

Together:
I want you to know

I've never had someone that knows me like you do
The way you do
I've never had someone as good for me as you
No one like you
So lonely before, I finally found
what I've been looking for

Together:
Doo Doo DooDoo
Doo Doo DooDoo
Do Do

Woa-ah-ah-oh

Doo Doo DooDoo
Doo Doo DooDoo
Do Do

Woa-ah-ah-oh
