High School Syllabus

Postby cabeza_magica on Fri Oct 14, 2011 1:31 am

Hey everyone, I'm about to start teaching English at a high school in S.Korea. I'm required to make a syllabus for the 1st and 2nd grades and I was wandering if anyone has any ideas? Thanks in advance. Also, I noticed that the HS section is quite empty and wandered if anyone has power point lessons or ideas for HS which they could share.
Cheers

What exactly are you expected to teach? Conversation? Writing and grammar? Mind being a bit more specific?

Do you have the finances to purchase textbooks?

I tend not to write a school syllabus while high. Just me though. (bwann bwannn bwoooon) -depressing horn sound generally used after a bad joke.

I would be very sure to get an outline of what they want you to teach. I know that is what a syllabus actually is, but get some indication of the direction they want you to take. You don't want to get to the end and have them say "That isn't really the direction we wanted to go."

All I've been told is that they want to focus on speaking. It appears to be very flexible and it seems like I'm there for them to practice their conversation skills. I'm unsure whether they have finances to purchase a textbook but don't want to be restricted by using one. I taught HS in Japan using a textbook and it was really difficult to make it interesting and fun. However, not having a text book means I have to spend more time making my own materials. Any ideas for creative conversational lessons are welcomed. I tend to use onestopenglish: http://www.onestopenglish.com/teenagers/ , Jamie Keddie: http://lessonstream.org/browse-lessons/?readinglevel=Beginner+to+Elementary+%28A1-A2%29&person=Teens and British Council: http://www.teachingenglish.org.uk/lesson-plans.
Any other sites or ideas you can recommend would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers

I personally used this conversation textbook when I taught in HS. While portions are a bit corny it is not too bad as a text for kids wanting to travel overseas. (Adults too I might add)

Thanks for your suggestion Paul, however I would prefer to choose something more up-to-date like Global( http://www.macmillanglobal.com/)but as I said before I don't think they are going to buy a set of textbooks. I suppose I will just have to be creative. :comppunch:
