any ideas for this warm up game? Q-chain game

Postby jessen100 on Fri Oct 07, 2011 9:30 am

i tried out this game with my 6th graders yesteday, which i would like to ask you all for ideas for, because i dont konw if i will want to keep it the same all the time. i would like to use it every class for the rest of the year, so i might need some things to keep it fresh. maybe they will keep liking it how it is, idk. aanyways its like this..

i call it the question chain game. So i have their name/student number list in hand, and numbered cards (1-30 or # of students). i have the teacher pull one card, and that student goes first. then i have the first student pull a card and start the timer. the first student asks the nest a question, they answer, pull a card and ask the next student a question. yesterday i did 3 minutes, and the goal is to see how many questions they can ask in the time limit put them against the other classes. so i tell them each classes results and whatnot, so its like a co-op race between classes. they liked it much more than i thought

we used "Can you~" yesterday and were gonna expand it to everything weve studied up to now. using "Do you ~" and what questions.

anyways, please share any twist ideas you have with me.

1. Break the class in half and do the same activity. You can still pit classes against each other, but halving the class with your HRT will allow students the opportunity to ask more than one question.

2. To get more questions into the time limit, preselect the order. That way you won't have a time gap where students are drawing for the next person.

3. If you preselect the order, you (ALT) can ask the first question to the first student. They have to answer it, then ask the next student a question. Essentially, each student has to answer a question and ask one.

Those are the things off the top of my head without actually seeing the game in real life.

excellent ideas.
(i feel less than confident in my explainations clarity)

i think they enjoy the randomness of it a lot, so preselecting might not be the best for now, but a good idea indeed. half the class, like maybe girls vs, boys could be a good idea too. ill keep that in mind. if one class consistently wins, and another loses all the time, it will be good to split it by class or they are likely to lose interest.

one reason i dont want to preselect the order is because if its random they should all know that they might have to do it, and think about it, and i can then hopefully get them all thinking, but finish the activity in less time. idk
