File size upload limit

Encountering problems/errors? Confused as to where functions are? Improvements? Is there something on the Englipedia website that is incorrect? Here's the place to let us know.

File size upload limit

Postby bum1 on Thu Apr 23, 2009 1:25 pm

I have created a 3 month 15 minute a week powerpoint phonics course for my students and I would like to share it with the community. The file sizes are about 3.5 meg each. This is above the alloted amount to upload and as a result I lost all of my explaination writing from the form.

Two questions
1. Is there any way around this restriction?
2 Could a file size limit warning be posted on the form with an inclusion that the details you typed will not be retained if the file is rejected for any reason? (Everyone should fill the form out in word and then copy and paste.)

Let me know what you think...

I bumped the max size to 5mbs. It was set at 3 because 3mbs is a bit big size file and I didn't think anybody needed more than that.

As for file size limit warning, I'll check into that but I have a feeling it can't be done. Regardo?

What I might suggest next time is to post ONLY the attachment first to see if it can handle a bigger size attachment, and then in the next post, write the explanation.

Bum, I received your phonics files from Regardo. If you'll so allow me, I'm going to edit the pictures a bit to hopefully get the size of the files down.

Give me a little while...I'm working on them now.

Also, since building Englipedia, I've acquired a mass folder of clipart. Would you mind it too much if I swapped out some of your pictures for images in my collection?

I don't mind at all. The point of these are to teach the sounds and to use the simple words that they likely already know. I am writing instructions for how to teach the lesson as well, so wait for those before you post these to the site.

I finished dropping the file size of one of your files down to under 1Mb. I'm uploading it here just as a test...

Nice. My teaching explainations should be up. I'll send you one of these every week for the next 2.5 months. It's a 3 month long deal and they are only meant to take up 15 minutes of class. I also spelt tongue wrong in the first explaination. 100 posts! Yay!

I just got done editing your other file. Got it down under 800kbs. I am now in the process of uploading both the two phonics lessons to the site.

First off kudos to Bum for adding these to the site here. Thank you!

One question for you here, maybe I missed something along the way, are there supposed to be sound files included with the PPP's?

If so, could you tell me how to access them.

If not, are there, or do you have plans to include them in the future?

I could foresee my students, in the future, accessing these on their own to practice their phonics but without any pronunciation to go along with them they might not be as useful as they possibly, or potentially could be.

Oooh. I was planning on doing that differently on our school website, however... You can make the sounds in the PPT files. I am going to give this some serious thought. Would we put a button to click on the page or would the sounds happen automatically after each click? It would certianly be bad to put the sounds in a live lesson so we would have to seperate the files and make sure that no one is surprised when they first run it.

I like the idea but I have one question, would adding an audio file seriously bump up the total file size? In Regardo's example, 1 page is 245kb. Bum's attachment has 26 slides...to me, that equates to a HUGE file.

it probably would. funny thing is, that the 4 sounds on my computer use only 32kb. haha. microsoft sucks;)
but honestly, it is a onetime download and it is for the kids to use it in their computerlab. maybe somehow it is possible to shrink the filesize. need to figure that out.

ok, the first page without sound is 206kb. without sounds and pictures the file is only 102kb.
so the sounds take only half the space the pictures do! *inyourfacesmiley:

The only I brought up the file size issue to begin with was Englipedia brags about having small webpages and file sizes. However, exceptions can be made for very specific occassions, which I think this may be.

Regardo, the example you gave only had ONE sound. Would that mean that the 'A page' would be triple the size of 102kb since A has three sounds?

Okay, I just was told that it doesn't matter if what we set the file upload to, the max for every attachment is 2Mb.

Also, Bum, got your other phonics lesson uploaded to the site. They are both on in the RECENTLY ADDED section of the homepage.

Regardo, I sent a bunch more oversized Mp3s to you for practice listening tests. I included the tests and scripts as well. Let me know if I am a go for making the instructions page.

I see, Regardo has the others, and I think I accidentally left in a question with my name on it in the second grade test so I am going to resend that one. I should have the forms completed for all three tomorrow.

In regards to the image you sent me (first grade listening test), I cleaned up the worksheet and dropped the file size down to 159kb.

I now have the image and audio file waiting for you to start a thread...
