Elective Classes

Hiya all

It's taken me a while to post this (post-holiday blues), but I was hoping that there would be some kind of special activities, games and projects for elective classes type of thing.

I have taught nearly 10 Elective classes at about 5 different schools over the past 4 - 5 years and I was wondering how many other SHS ALTs have to teach sentaku classes as well?

Cheers

When I was in SHS one thing I liked to do when there was time was prepare a movie or video series for a class. The kids loved it of course and it was a great listening excersize too.

Get a movie or what not, and then create a question list pertaining to the movie and the dialogue if you classes level is up to it. Make it into a quiz/test format and if you kids are really high level create a question and answer period or debate about the movie if you choose one that is or has a moral to the story.

This can be a one shot thing, yet it can also be one that takes a few weeks to do and gets the kids interested in coming to your class.

Make sure they know that it will be graded as well.

Hi! In my small, higher level elective classes (and my English clubs) I try to use at least part of the lesson as a conversation class. When I first tried to do this, it failed pretty badly because the students, while their level is high, were unwilling to talk - they just needed a bit more guidance. So now, what I do is pick a topic (for example, we recently reflected on their memories from elementary school) and then I write heaps of questions on that topic. I cut the questions into strips and put them in a hat. Each student then takes a question from the hat. I always write enough questions so that there will be many extras, and if they don't like the one they get they are allowed to try again. Then, each student reads their question out, and then gives their answer. I ask them follow up questions, and try to elicit follow up questions from the other students.

Sometimes I have them loosely paired so that it is the job of the other student to ask a follow-up question. Often little mini conversations will grow like this.

I also take as many photos/ items as I can that relate to the topic just to add interest/ stimulate conversation. For example, for the elementary school one, I printed out some photos of me when I was little... the students got a bang out of it, but unfortunately agreed unanimously that my little sister was cuter than me!)

Another fun conversation starter I like to use is hypothetical questions. Eg. "If you could take one thing to a deserted island, what would it be?" etc.

Hope that's handy!

:)

Just curious here, how many people posting here are actually teaching in HS?

I think everyone posting in this area teaches in HS...with the exception of me. I was bringing over the threads from the old forum.

I am curious if any of the HS teachers here have the opportunity to have the students purchase their own text's for their elective classes?

When I taught in HS, I was given an "English Conversation Class" to run for 2nd and 3rd year HS students. I was able to pickout any English Conversation Textbook for the class and the kids paid for them.

If anyone has that chance I would like to know what texts you use. Or if people just want to add their ideas, what Eikawa Texts would you recommend for HS kids?

Idea for new thread........ :bubble:
