Foreign language tourettes

How many times have you had the following happen?

You're sitting there minding your own business when a Japanese person will utter out a word in English, sit there and look at you and wait for a response like they just asked a coherant question in English. My kyoto sensei, nicest guy in the world, just did this. He sits across from he and just looked up and said, "surveillance". I was like, "Okay..." These situations have always been kinda ackward for me because I'm stuck trying to formulate a meaning based upon a whole one-word conversation.

Thank goodness I'm not too bad at Japanese, I was able to solicit that he was asking what the word meant in Japanese, but still... Even communicating in Japanese I would never turn to someone out of the blue and who I hadn't recently engaged in a conversation with and say one word and wait for a response.

Next time, after someone does something like that to you, turn the tables and say something in Japanese to them in the same tone of voice and use the same facial reactions that they gave you.

See how quick some of them will get the hint. However be careful on the timing because it might make certain people more wary to approach you to ask something the next time.

Sad thing is, they probably won't get it.

Otaku, what is a kyoto sensei? Do you teach in Kyoto or does someone teach you about Kyoto?

"kyoto sensei" is Japanese for "vice-principal"

And I thought this as well until about two weeks ago at the weekly Monday AM staff meeting at one of my schools and the principal was talking about the new managerial position that is being considered for ES and JHS's in Japan.

Fuku-kocho or Vice Principal.

After all these years I had thought that the kyoto sensei was the VP. Now if this "change" comes about I guess they are getting demoted.

Thanks, I was a little confused. I thought my listening skills in Japanese were off. Because I call the Principal Kocho sensei and I thought the others teachers were too. The vice principal is Fukukocho sensei.

教頭 「きょうとう」 is the head teacher.

副校長 「ふくこうちょう」 is vice principal (or SUB principal if you want to be pedantic)

副 「副」 can mean vice-, sub-, deputy-

An easy way for you kanji learners to remember it is from

副音声 「ふくおんせい」 (secondary audio channel)

on your TV, DVD, when switching audio channels from EN to JP.

I didn't explain anything. I simply asked, "What's the question?"
