New Horizon - grade 1, unit 2 - Simple Convo at School

Postby Otaku on Tue May 19, 2009 3:56 pm

Unit one ends with Ms. Green talking with Shin and her telling Shin that she is from Canada. While Emi is putting away her shoes, she is listening to their conversation. I will skip over the fact that 99.9% of students would already know where their teacher is from because they would have already listened to their English teacher give a big speech in front of the entire school outlining where they are from. Let's move onto how it transitions into unit 2.

Unit two starts with Emi pointing to a map and stating to Ms. Green, "This is your country." IS EMI A RETARDED HANDICAPPED STUDENT!?!? I think Ms. Green probably knows where her country is located, but in all fairness, Ms. Green is a blonde...

If the textbook writers were trying to go for a natural English feel, coupled with how much the average Japanese JHS student knows about the outside world, I would think Emi lead off with a question, "Is this your country?"

I think Shin might be a handicap student as well because on the very next page, he points at a classroom and says to Ms. Green, "That's a classroom," as if Ms. Green was going to confuse students sitting at their desks as the massive community toilet area.

Otaku, close the textbook and walk away...

I know some ALTs who don't do a self-intoduction in front of the entire school, for whatever reason. So, maybe Ms. Green's school doesn't do them? Or maybe it is the first day, before the introductions?

As for the map bit, we'll just pretend that Ms. Green can't find her country because she is looking at a Japanese map and got confused seeing Japan in the middle. That does throw people off.

otaku, you keep on forgetting one essential thing: gaikokujin are STUPID! they can't find their own country on a map, because the whole concept of a map is beyond them. ;)

Yeah, I guess you're right. While there might not be any words of any language on the map altogether, the map does look really out of proportion. Japan is in the center of it, and Alaska is missing one of its legs.

But still, while Ms. Green might have an IQ below plant life, she is living in another country. Me thinks she would have a better reference point to where she comes from in reference to Japan than a Japanese JHS student who mostly has a triangle as a mouth.

And, if you wanna get REALLY technical, Emi is pointing at the northern part of the United States...

Its not that bad is it? Otaku, maybe a long holiday without any textbooks in sight will lessen your loathing for them. I still think theyre ok.

Otaku...........................deep breath in, exhale saying he he he he he, like they teach in Lamaze classes.

The more you find yourself butting your head against the wall trying to figure out why Mike is taking a plane to go to Lake Towada, and why in the hell Emi is taking a three day vacation to Easter Island, it is probably going to be better for you to just....deep breath in, exhale saying he he he he he, like they teach in Lamaze classes.
