READING! some sentences of nonsense

Postby jessen100 on Wed Apr 15, 2009 3:26 pm

ok so im making some sentences of short vowel sounded words, as well as words that contain the E rule. trying to make them as easy as possible, i got 11 so far, increasing in difficulty i guess. the more exclusive a sentence is with a particular short vowel sound the better, (in the case that you want to think of some and write them in this post). im planning on giving these to my 5th and 6th graders to practice reading. edit these for some more sensability too if you feel like it.

1. The big pig hit him in the shin. <---starting with short I sound, and just telling them that the is the.
2. I let my pet get fed in bed. <---including short I while introducing short E
3. The cops pop a shot on the rock. <---introduction of short O and "a" is read "uh"
4. Hop on pop in a box.
5. The cat in the hat is fat as a rat. <-- now short A
6. The fat cat ran in the race. <-- and the e rule
7. The pug nose pup did not run in the sun. <--and some more
8. I ride my bike like a pike.
9. No pope can cope with a lock box and a rope. <--what?
10. A rude dude made a tune last June
11. If six mice bite a kite at rice time, they will find it is a crime.

im thinking maybe if they ask what the sentences mean ill just ignore them for now.

write some!

I don't have any example sentences to contribute as of now but I thought I'd include all the JHS words that fall under the two phonics words you're going for. The list might be of some use when making sentences. These words are pulled from the New Horizon series.

I regularly hear, or maybe I should say traditionally hear in Japan that the Japanese people have the hardest time with the "L" and "R" sounds in English.

However to me at least I have found that that many students can cover the "L" and "R" sound if used in a sentence without any other words that have difficult pronunciations, if said alone though, well it is up to the individual...BUT

I am of the opinion that the short "i" and "e" are much more difficult for them to both hear and learn because to many they are almost the same sound. I try to practice these sounds using the words bet and bit and I suggest to the students that to distinguish between them that the short "e" sound should sound like you are trying to push the sound up out from your stomach and make a forceful sound like I am about to puke out a word that starts with the short "e" like egg.

For the short "i" sound I try to get them to both imagine and practice sucking in the sound of "i" and cutting the sound off as it reaches the back of your throat. I have them try first with the word ink.

Imagine if you will 35 or so kids all pushing out violently the short "e" sound e e e e e e
Then sucking in the short "i" sound i i i i i i i.

I have to remember to take pictures or video's of this kind of stuff, writing it out leaves way too much to the imagination. :D

I don't mean to keep posting about the Englipedia website, but there is a great article written by a speech pathologist about the R & L: http://jhsenglipediaproject.com/methodo ... LandR.aspx

I too think the short vowel 'e' and 'i' sounds are a challenge to handle. I'm going to class but will post how I handle these two sounds later on.

short vowel 'e': I teach this as the "gay marriage" sound. My JTE is a guy so I ask the students what they would say if he and I got married...

ええええええええ...! Then, I tell them to shrink it to only one え.

short vowel 'i': I teach this as the "big smile" sound. I get the students to smile from ear to ear and practice saying different short vowel 'i' words: pig, pin, Bin, did, six, etc.

I've had pretty good success with both of these strategies.

Hey good idea, (great in fact) but I think making them trying to make sense misses the point.
If the kids are meant to understand what they read, youre gonna have to explain a whole bunch of grammar points, vocab meanings etc.

I suggest shorter sentences, less non-critical words, more rhythm

a lock a box a rock a sock a fig a pig a dog <= only A
a lockbox... a rock sock.... a big pig dog-dog! <= Different rhythm
what is better what is letter what is litter what is bitter <=repetition of WHAT IS (which they know already)
bit bat bot but, bitter better batter butter! <== no words at all! all rhythm
biting bating boting buting, bittering battering bottering buttering! <==the complex version!
rick em, rock em, rack em, ruck em take that ball and really forget about this one

Oh and theres also a song I learned while studying German which was awesome.

Three Chinese with a contrabass. (Drei Chinesen mit dem Kontrabass)
The first time you sing is normal.. the second time all vowels change to "i", 3rd time all change to "e" etc etc
(Drii Chiiniisiin miit Diim Ciintriibiiss)

Let me translate the song just cus its awesome.
**************
Three Chinese with a Contrabass.
Coming down the street and Ill tell you WHAT!
Along comes the policeman : "Oi oi Whats this then?"
Three CHinese with a Kontrabass
***********
but thats singing not reading.
LINKAGE!!!
http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drei_Chinesen_mit_dem_Kontrabass click on Hörbeispiel to hear it.

However, I remember every single German word in that song and how to pronounce it. Compared to the other 200 days of the course of which I remember PENCIL and THIS IS MY DESK.

Anyway I think my good friend Dr Seuss could be of more help than I.

It's a loaded way to teach the え sound too.
(I support gay people's right to marriage if you care)
