Spelling rules.

okay, ive created a list of prettymuch all the spelling rules that english has to offer. with a few stupidly specific rules left out, and a few left in. All in japanese, and all read by my JTEs, so i know that japanese people can comprehend it. (it seems that they do?)


i think it could stand to have a few more rules added into it, in terms of things that english speakers dont recognize as rules because they are too simple, which japanese people dont automatically get. maybe. such as when s is between two vowels its pronounced with a z sound, still gotta put that one in.

ok, so ppl who know japanese look it over and tell me what you think.
ppl who dont read japanese, give me your thoughts on the idea of using this.

ill redo it into english when im not feeling lazy.

I'm not sure why you loaded the file into the gallery. If you look below the box of where you type your message (I'm not talking about the 'quick reply' area), there is an area where you can attach files. I think that might have saved you from needing to post in the gallery.

BTW, glancing over your post of the rules, it looks like you've worked hard on it. Good job! I'm impressed!

One suggestion, you might think about translating it back into English for non-Japanese reading people.

ok, so i didnt try all that hard to see if i could just upload it to the forums. ill just delete it from the gallery, i was in a hurry to do something with it. it was time to go home for the day after a no class day.

it wont take much time to put it back into english, so once i get that time ill do that. but this kind of list can be found pretty easily since i just translated one i found, after comparing it to a few others.

so ideally, if one felt so inclined to teach kids how to spell, you could spread these rules throughout a year (maybe less?). first problem is getting them to recognize the sounds for what they are though.

if you could do me a favor and hand this to your JTE and see what they think id appreciate it. as in how they feel about teaching these to students over time.

i gave one to each of mine, and they havent really acknowledged anything about it.

though there might be one part where they say "what? omg wtf is this? i dont understand!" because i wrote slightly figuratively in japanese. and i didnt have anyone check it.

if nothing else, i think it would be good to get the pronunciatino marks incorporated intoi the system better. im speaking of straight lines for long vowels curved lines for short vowels, and dots for r influenced vowels and what not. at least a few of those rules are probably reasonably useless in japanese english education.

i noticed that some one the words i used for "long vowel sounds" in japanese was inconsistent. i changed it to 長母音 in all cases. in japanese this word would mean to elongate the sound, rather than change it. However, considering that it clearly means long vowel sound, i insist on sticking with it, make them get used to the fact that this concept can be concieved as a different thing in english. they also have 二重母音、but that clearly says double vowel to me, and while yes, double vowels are often read as long vowels sounds they are different things right? not sure what the best thing to do about this is.

theres also one part where i noticed i just totally neglected to translate. wasnt sure how to translate the word "blend" in this case. blend referring a blend of consonants, such "bl" in "blend", "tr" in "track". dont have classes past 2 pm today it seems so expect the english edition to be released shortly after that.

i changed the order of rules 14 and 15, then added the s rule to the end.
otherwise it says prettymuch the same thing as in japanese i think.

note that this is for reading/spelling though, not really phonics. its necessary to already know phonics to do this at all, id think. i suppose doing some stuff at the same time. would work though too.

I cant help but notice though.. that ball and all rhyme with dog ? hrehe... in MYYYYYYY country.. dog has its own sound.
Thats right. It's pronounced "earwax". Same as bog, drop and log.
(naturally pronounced - "whipapee", "lerpe", and "tun".

Allow me to show illustrate this with a sentence: "My dog dropped a log in the bog."
Would be pronounced correctly as.... "My earwax lerped a tun in the whipapee. "

i wasnt saying that ball and all rhyme with dog, but for me the vowel sound its close, if not the same.

also, bog and log have different vowel sounds in my english.

but this is obviously one of those points that will be different based upon the speaker i guess, so just change it how you see fit i suppose.

Really? I understand pronunciation differs from person to person and also based upon country. But, those bog and log are both 'short vowel' words with the same vowel being used. I'm a little confused as to why the pronunciation would be different. Is it maybe a little qwirk in how you say these words, rather than how those two words should be pronounced?

For example, growing up, I would always leave the P-sound out of the word "napkin". Finally, I got tired of people not understand what I was saying and added the P-sound. This was a difference unique to me, rather than the actual sound of the word. Could this not be the case here?
