The pages of each volume are exactly 2 in. thick. The covers are each 1/6 in. thick. A bookworm started eating at page 1 of Volume I and ate through to the last page of Volume IV. What is the distance the bookworm covered?

Wait. Are the covers 1/6 of an inch each or combined are they 1/6 of an inch?

Right and are the front of the covers and the back of the covers together 1/6 of an inch? Or is the front 1/6 and the back part 1/6?

Posting before I see other posts:

9 inches - 2 for each volume's pages, and 1 for all but 2 covers.

If only one of the answers is correct it has to be 5in because the other 4 answers are each pairs (or am I just looking into the English too much hah)

I don't actually see it posted up here, but I say:

4 2/6 in.

I've been in Japan too long and I totally missed that "page one" reference!

I'd also say 5in now (first I thought 9), the worm eats only the middle two volumes, plus front cover of volume I and back cover of volume IV. And also plus 1st and last page of volumes I and IV respectively, right? But maybe that doesn't count...!?

5 inches.

I almost added an extra book though (remembered which end to start from book one, but forgot about book 4!)

The distance it covered is irrelevant, all of the books are in a fire now.

I see. Yeah, it's 5. But if you open up book 1 so that he could eat through it (minus the front cover), then go out and eat through book 4 to the last page, then the distance through which it has eaten would be 4 2/6 in.
