TOKYO —
The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology said Tuesday that it had received reports of 77,630 cases of bullying at schools for the 2010 school year across Japan. These include elementary, middle, high, and special support education schools, NTV reported.

The figure is a 6.7% increase over the 2009 school year, the ministry said in a statement to media.

Meanwhile, the number of students who stayed away from school for more than 30 days for reasons other than sickness was 119,891, NTV reported.

As the economy get's worse and pressures rise on families this number is going to inflate even more I do believe. The bigger problem is what about the one's that weren't recognized officially as "bullying"? The number's don't tell the entire story.

That's for sure! I know there is a lot of bullying going on at my school, but most of it goes unreported.

Actually, I used to get picked on a lot when I was younger so I feel for these kids. It can be hard to know what to do, and when you are getting bullied a lot of times you don't report it for fear of things escalating.
I try and step in as best as I can - usually distracting the kids who are bullying someone by talking to them. It gives the other kid a chance to escape while the bully is distracted.

Smash em bro! That's the advice my mum used to give me about being bullied. If they get a smash, they will go looking for an easier target next time. :chin:
