What's the odds the lay jury system will find it impossible to impose the death penalty for killing a gaijin, I'd put my money on a slap on the wrists for him.

There is no chance he will get the death peni.

He MIGHT spend another extra ten years in the clink cas he ran instead of admitting his guilt but that's about it. What is the average sentence for the murder of a single person here in Japan (provided the corpse was not abused or otherwise desecrated/cut in pieces, eaten etc... and guilt was admitted to by the perp)
5-10 maybe?

What else is fairly amazing is that his folks appeared to give a statement to the media. This is virtually almost unheard of in this country.
As anyone who has been here for awhile can attest to, there are almost NEVER any instances of the accuseds family members making a statement to the media in murder cases.
