Everything happens for raisins. I had a really nice job I was looking at, I think I did quite well in the interview and was there 30 mins before the event. My Japanese isn't fantastic, but I managed alright. As I left, there was another ALT going for the same job, I wished him luck and he just grunted. Twat. I think he got the job too. I would have taken care of the kids as well as taught them, it was a smaller community BOE. Ultimately, they said I didn't have the experience, which is fair enough, but I was quite honestly, perfect for the job (imo).
What I'm driving at, with this self-absorbed anecdote, is that no matter how good you are for a job, ANY one thing can make the interviews change their minds...even your shoes. Either way, keep trying and they will see how much you want it and are driving for it. You seem like a nice guy with bags of humour, use that humour now and glide over this issue, don't feel down, don't feel bad, and don't ask what you might have done wrong. Just smile and wait another year, you'll be fine.
EDIT: Popped my Oxford comma in.
