Interesting, I must say that I have never experienced anything like this, in fact I have had the reverse happen since my blood type is B-. I used to be registered here as a blood donor and can not count how many times I was called and asked to donate blood, evidently B- is not common amongst Japanese people, but I took my name off of the list because there were a couple of times they called me at work, asked me to come and donate like NOW, even suggesting that I take nenkyu to come in and donate.
I couldn't get away from my job and the first time it happened I figured it was an emergency and complied, but when I got there to donate they told me that no it wasnt an emergency, only that their supplies were getting low and they needed to restock. The second time they called I asked if it was an emergency and they said no, and gave me the same reason. I declined and they got testy with me telling me I had to donate, I told them that no I didnt have to do anything and then told them to take my name off the emergency list.
I haven't donated blood since.
