Is anybody else ready?

Earthquakes, tsunamis, floods, nuclear power plant meltdowns, etc.

Is anybody else ready?

Postby azuhl on Wed Feb 22, 2012 10:51 am

I'm really, really prepared for the next 'big-one', the only thing I'm currently missing is two-way radios. My plate-carrier arrived, sorted all my hydration gear, rations, emergency shelter, and medical gear. I'll post pics once I have them...if anyone is interested. I'm interested to know, who keeps a grab-bag/emergency-bag or load carrying gear for a natural disaster?

Right, enough piss-taking. I'm genuinely interested if you guys put emphasis on that at all. My missus still thinks I'm crazy...so do I a little, but PPPPPPP.

Beyond the basics of storing water, candles, flashlight, batteries, warm clothes, food, and maybe one of those portable stove burner thingy that takes those gas canisters, what else can you be prepared for or worry about?

I've been through 3 major earthquakes in Japan. Things shake...you just gotta learn to accept it or hightail it out of this country. Nothing you can do to change living on two fault lines. If it's your time, there's nothing you can do so why worry about it.

Beyond that, I don't prepare much or think about what's going to come. Leads to too much stress!

Funnily enough, the lovely wife has dog food stored in the car in case something catastrophic happens, but nothing for us. Seriously.

Cheers,Otaku. Having no car means I have to physically carry everything I need, there's a full trauma kit for MIMMS and I (plus the missus) can self-sustain for up to five days outside of shelter. Looking for larger ortleib drysacks for flotation, but we'll see. I'm a worrier, having all the kit stops the worrying.

Bloody hell you are prepared. You've even got an emergency cat. I don't have anything really. You've made me feel like I need a secret stash...Maybe I'll put it on my to do list.

About the cat though. I was thinking about getting one...how big is your apartment?

Yeah, the cat (we now have two) is an essential for any rescue or Triage Op. She was a rescue from a cardboard-box in a field, the other is from Japan Cat Network, he was abandoned in Fukushima after the disaster, he's ours now and if you want a cat, I highly recommend you get a rescue as opposed to buying from a shop. If you need any details, please inbox me. My apartment isn't too large, we're moving on up though, so they will have more room. It's a 2 LDK. Bear in mind that quarantine laws are strict TO the UK, if you wanted to take him/her back, it would be a 6 month wait. I'd recommend having a grab-bag ready, if you get displaced then you'll at least have dry clothing to wear and food to eat.

EDIT: Was 6 months without PETS, now see: http://www.defra.gov.uk/wildlife-pets/pets/travel/quarantine/

I'd much rather get a shelter cat than a shop one, though preferably one with a tail. Not the biggest fan of Japanese bob tails. What are vet bills etc like over here? Are they expensive to have?

Not really, we paid a fair bit for her operation (you know the one) and I think after 9 months we've spent about 30K on her, a LARGE chunk of that being the op. We really take care of her and any issues are immediately seen at the vets. If you get one from JCN, they will be spayed or neutered but you'll have to plum down about 10K for the deal...much cheaper than our vets. I think it's about 1000Y for a basic visit to the vets, then medicine on top of that, the most we've paid for a non-surgical matter is about 7K and that was for a whole host of meds when our new cat came to us (he'd picked up a cold and an eye infection at the shelter). Don't let the money put you off though, pets are expensive, but you get the company they can provide. JCN are very accommodating and will bring the cats from 'where-ever' to meet you.

I highly recommend going with these guys, they try their best to look after the cats and will go very far to see a cat re-homed, they were very good with advice for me and very supportive.

I have found our dog's visits cheap remarkably cheap compared to NZ. In NZ you get assraped as you walk in the door as a courtesy. But that is for minor stuff. Not sure about the big stuff. (Knock on wood)

Yeah, same in the UK, especially w/o pet insurance...and Japan being as expensive as it is, I assumed the same, ended up pretty cheap in comparison.

You inspired me. I went out and bought a water tank, a camping stove and 12 hours worth of camping gas. So now we'll die of carbon monoxide poisoning before we die of cold and tainted water. Yay!
