my thoughts exactly. looks like they got some writing tips from Japan Today. (Where it seems they leave out details on purpose, just to enrage us.)

I would imagine that it refers to getting a whole bunch of scarfies together to act as an 'army' of volunteers. As well as providing needed assistance free of charge, it also provides an opportunity for businesses and individuals to donate cash and resource to a readily identifiable force for good. If anyone wants to add to that or disagree please go ahead.

It's more in the "giving a hand" sense. Guys walking round with wheelbarrows and shovels and stuff just chipping in.

I get the idea, and thinks it's great! I think that there are plenty of younger type folks out here in Japanland that would love to help out. Maybe they don't have the cash, but they have the energy and will-power and their youth and exuberance would be a lift to a lot of the older folks that are genuinely worried about how they are going to get their houses cleaned.

I also think that the spirit of volunteerism should be fostered among the youth of Japan and not when then get older and use money instead of muscle to show support for those in need.

When I was in HS and Uni it was required for graduation that we did community service. I worked twice a week as a volunteer at a homeless shelter and soup kitchen, it took me almost an hour one way by bus to get there, and it was a really lousy neighborhood, but I have some of the best memories of my life from that time and I will never forget it.

I wish them luck.

My bad. "Scarfies" - NZ slang for "students"

Technically "scarfie" is only used for students from Otago University. The southern most University in New Zealand and the world.
