Difference between HS and JHS

Postby Shamisen on Wed Mar 11, 2009 2:19 pm

Im curious about teaching High School. I teach JHS and ES.
Ive heard that JETs often get the High Schools. Are you guys JETs?
Also, is there a clear difference in teaching styles?

This is an old post, but I am curious too. Same situation as Shamisen, teach ES and JHS but want to know what teaching in a High School is like. I can see it having some advantages and some disadvantages too.

Differences in Junior High Schools

That is the link to the thread that sonofobed referred to but since this is a question that is related to HS and JHS I think that for at least the time being it should stay as it is and let's see where it goes.

Shamisen if you look at the link about you may find some of the answers to questions that you have in your OP. :D

I know there are plenty of JET's placed in HS's as well as JHS's.

I think the biggest difference by far is that in HS many ALT's/JET's do NOT necessarily team teach compared to JHS.

Since HS here in Japan is not a part of the compulsory education HS's have more leeway in allowing non-licensed teachers teaching English. From my own experience in teaching in HS for 4 years, I never, not even once, had another teacher in the classroom with me. I was responsible for all course material, and was also responsible for testing and grading as well. I had all the responsibilities that any other teacher had.

There was far more freedom to do as I chose during class and it was more challenging and fun than JHS in many respects.

In JHS on the other hand there are fewer responsibilities and less freedom in what to teach, plus a majority of the classes are "team-taught" with a Japanese Teacher of English (JTE).

However some of the JTE's give quite a bit of leeway in allowing me what to do in class, even as far as telling me, "Hey you have so and so hours of class this week, find something to do with the kids, here is what we have done recently, do an activity, read, whatever, it's your time" , those are the classes that keep me going at what I do because the teacher's so far, knock on wood, have NEVER interfered with whatever I have done.
